Abstract

The article explores the redistribution-recognition dilemma as conceived by Nancy Fraser. After a brief exposition of the “feminist turn” in critical theory, starting in the 1980s, the article examines Fraser's understanding of current political struggles and the remedies they propose. It then examines the author's proposal to replace the identity model, characteristic of the struggle for recognition, with the status model, emphasizing the idea of subordination as a mobilizer of the struggle for cultural appreciation. Finally, the article concludes by emphasizing that, although Fraser always highlights the difference between claims for redistribution and recognition, he also understands that they are struggles that need to be thought together, since social justice will not be fully achieved without attacking all forms of inequality. The author called this “perspective dualism”, which represents her own understanding of social struggle in the context of the critique of contemporary society.
