This article aims to discuss jurist Rui Barbosa’s thoughts on Brazilian education, taking as a time frame the transition from the imperial period to the republican period (1887-1910). To develop and support the work, the authors Nogueira (1996), Machado (1999; 2010), Lourenço Filho (2001), Porto Júnior (2003), Oliveira Júnior (2015), among others, were used. The sources used, in addition to the writings of the intellectual under study, were his speeches and opinions that are gathered chronologically in an extensive work of dozens of volumes, organized and published by Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa. Lawyer and politician, great defender of individual freedoms and the modernization of the country, with eloquence, he projected education as an engine for national development. Known for his contributions in the national legal and political sphere, his actions in favor of offering quality teaching and improvements in education are still little studied. The aim of this work is to present Rui Barbosa’s contributions in the educational sphere, without the aim of exhausting the greatness of his legacy, highlighting the trends of his thought within the defined period.
