Abstract

This article presents the emigration and immigration of northern Minas Gerais mesoregion in
relation to other mesoregions. The database was the 2010 Demographic Census of the Brazilian
Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The methodological approach consisted of
bibliographic survey, data processing of the 2010 Census and map elaboration. The North of
Minas Gerais covers eighty nine municipalities, which economy is primarily based on
agriculture and stock breeding except Montes Claros, Pirapora, Bocaiuva and Várzea da Palma
harboring the industrial sector and strong trade network. Montes Claros is a regional hub with
more specialized, educational, health, financial, legal services, so the biggest population
attraction place of the mesoregion. The 2010 Demographic Census showed that the emigration
in the North of Minas Gerais is bigger for the Metropolitan mesoregions of Belo Horizonte and
Triângulo Mineiro / Alto Paranaíba. The municipalities of Montes Claros and Pirapora excel in
number of emigrants. Regarding immigration the greatest number of individuals is of the
Metropolitan mesoregion of Belo Horizonte, but all the mesoregions sent individuals to the
North of Minas Gerais. Emigration is exceeding immigration and migration is also significant
among municipalities in the North of Minas Gerais.
