Abstract
ABSTRACT
In June of 2019, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) released a document with guidelines for safe return to training after a period of inactivity (CSCCa and NSCA Joint Consensus Guidelines for Transition Periods: Safe Return to Training Following Inactivity). The necessity to elaboration of a document in this regard would be related to an elevated incidence of injuries and deaths due to this thermic stress (Exertional Heat Illness), rhabdomyolysis, and exercise-induced cardiorespiratory failures in college athletes in the latest years. The data indicate that complications and deaths are more frequent during periods of transition from physical inactivity to regular training. The elaborated guidelines aim to establish upper limits for volume, intensity, and the load/rest ratio during periods of major vulnerability among athletes in transition periods. These guidelines will help physical trainers and physical education professionals to design safe and effective programs for the first 2-4 weeks of transition periods preceded by moments of physical inactivity or due to interruptions in the training period due to thermic stress (Exertional Heat Illness), rhabdomyolysis, and exercise-induced cardiorespiratory failure. In addition to the guidelines in focus, it is understood that pre-medical participation, evaluations and establishment of action plans of emergency are fundamentals for the reduction of incidence of injuries and deaths on young athletes at university age.
