Physical Preparation in Surfing: a review study

INTRODUCTION: Surfing is considered an adventure sport. This sport integrates the practitioner's body and voluntary exposure, which, at the time of practice, overcomes physical and emotional limits. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify and discuss the physical qualities inherent in the practice of surfing, offering subsidies for physical preparation in this modality. METHODS: This is a narrative review of the literature, where the topic physical qualities in surfing was addressed. Articles, scientific works and books already published were included. The following databases were used: Google Scholar, Pubmed, Scielo; and the keywords used were: Physical qualities in surfing, physical preparation in surfing, biomotor skills in surfing, training in surfing and physical training in surfing. The search was carried out in Portuguese and English.
RESULTS: A total of 17 studies were included to discuss the aforementioned manuscript. DISCUSSION: Functional training is presented with integrated and multiplanar exercises, which require acceleration, deceleration and stabilization from the surf athlete; in everyday life, it is related to movements of pushing, pulling, sitting and standing up, coinciding with movements that occur in surfing. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that, after identifying and discussing the physical qualities in surfing, it is clear that in the studies found there are several training proposals for the modality, but in none of these studies was a conceptual concern regarding the physical qualities found. present in surfing and its practical application. Thus, this article proposes adequate planning, a more specific prescription for the surfer, with the presence not only of a coach, but other professionals who must compose a multidisciplinary technical commission in this sport.
