Abstract

Sleep is essential for maintaining health and quality of life and is positively related to physical activity. Those who practice it benefit from greater muscle relaxation and reduced nervous tension. The present study aimed to compare the quality of sleep of teachers who practice and do not practice bodybuilding, in the city of Januária, north of Minas Gerais. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative and comparative study. The sample was selected using the non-probability sampling method. 93 teachers participated in the research, 34 of whom were practitioners and 59 were non-bodybuilders, of both sexes, aged between 28 and 58 years old, with an average age of 41 years old. To be included in the study, bodybuilders must have, at least, 6 months of training, and the group of non-practitioners must have at least 1 year of teaching. To carry out this study, the approved and validated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire was used, which offers an index of severity and nature of the disorder, being a combination of quantitative and qualitative information about sleep. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with relative frequencies. For variables of interest, we used the Chi-square test and the significance index (p=<0.05), with values in percentages. The results indicated that in males there was a significant difference between the groups of practitioners and non-practitioners (P=0.044). Already, in females there was no difference between the groups (P=0.065), among practitioners there was a significant difference between the groups (P=0.001) and those who do not practice there was no difference between the groups (P=0.26). It is concluded that female teachers showed better results in sleep quality compared to male teachers.
