Abstract

Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder. In sarcopenia there is low muscle mass and low muscle strength, which results in loss of daily functions and increased risk of falls. Preventing the occurrence of this condition is essential to guarantee a higher quality of life for the elderly. The objective of this work is to analyze the relevance of physical exercise as a means of preventing sarcopenia. It is a systematic review conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review Protocols (PRISMA) guidelines, seeking to answer: what is the relevance of physical activity for the prevention and control of sarcopenia and what are the indications? The practice of resistance training, associated with aerobic training, is necessary to prevent sarcopenia in the population. The review highlights the need for effective intervention strategies even in youth, aiming to improve long-term quality of life and mitigate the development of sarcopenia. There is a need to individualize physical exercise recommendations, especially in relation to different genders or associated conditions of individuals, such as obesity. Furthermore, the prevention of sarcopenia is aligned with the prevention of other degenerative conditions of the aging process, such as osteoporosis.
