Tracking cognitive and depressive symptoms in elderly patients

Population aging has been increasing in Brazil over time, being one of the most
important demographic phenomena nowadays with a direct interference on the prevalence of
diseases such as depression and cognitive deficit. The study objective was to track cognitive
decline and depressive symptoms in elderly patients at the Center of Health Care and of
Professional Practices in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. Seniors aged 60 years old or above were
evaluated through the following instruments: GDS-15 and Mini-Mental State Examination. It was
identified that out of 80 elderly patients the age average was 70 years old and the years of
schooling average was of 4.6 years, 46% had cognitive decline and 36% depressive symptoms.
With regards to depressive symptoms and low cognition combined, prevalence was observed on
52% of the patients. It was concluded that there was a higher prevalence of elderly patients with
low schooling, female gender and decline of cognitive status in 46% of the sample. Future studies
are needed to assess these seniors in a longitudinally way for diagnosing dementia.
