Este artigo traz uma revisão da literatura sobre fluorose, patologia que acomete o
germe dentário pela presença excessiva de fluoreto durante a formação do dente. O fluoreto tem
sido amplamente utilizado em odontologia para prevenção da cárie dentária. Os mecanismos
pelos quais o fluoreto provoca a fluorose ainda são pouco esclarecidos. Suas manifestações
clínicas são amplas e variam muito de uma pessoa para outra. Vários fatores afetam a gravidade
das lesões fluoróticas, entre eles a temperatura, desordens metabólicas e idade da criança.
Comunidades do Norte de Minas Gerais têm sido acometidas pela fluorose a partir do consumo
de água com sobreconcentração de fluoreto, oriunda de poços tubulares perfurados para garantir
a sobrevivência das pessoas numa região seca, vitimada por períodos de longas estiagens.
