Objective: To evaluate the association between oral health literacy (OHL) and the self-perception of parents/caregivers regarding the presence of permanent teeth in the oral cavity of children with mixed dentition. Method: Analytical observational study including 51 pairs of parents/caregivers and children aged between six and 11 years. A questionnaire was used to assess the self-perception of parents/caregivers regarding the presence and number of permanent teeth present in the child's oral cavity. Socioeconomic and demographic data were also assessed. OHL was measured using the BREALD-30 instrument by two calibrated interviewers (K≥0.923). A clinical examination was performed by two trained examiners to assess the number and location of permanent teeth present in children´s oral cavity. Data were evaluated by descriptive analysis, intraclass correlation coefficient test and nonparametric tests. Results: Higher OHL scores were associated with adequate parental self-perception regarding the presence of permanent teeth (P=0.043). There was agreement regarding the number of permanent teeth between the examiners and the participants with a high level of OHL(P<0.05). Conclusions: OHL is associated with the self-perception of parents and caregivers regarding the presence of permanent teeth in children with mixed dentition.
