Diversidade de insetos galhadores associada com Copaifera arenicola: estágio ontogenético, crescimento dos ramos e interações interespecíficas.

Abstract

The organization of galling insect communities can be affected by host plant traits and interspecific interactions. In this study we tested three hypotheses: (i) the structure of the galling insect community differs between trees and shrubs of Copaifera arenicola  (Fabaceae); (ii) plants with greater growth rates (vigour) have higher richness and abundance of galling insects; and (iii) interspecific competition is a force capable of shaping the organization of galling insect community associated with C arenicola. A total of 25 species of galling insects were collected from C. arenicola plants. The community of galling insects (richness, abundance, and composition) did not varied between shrubs and trees of C. arenicola. The growth rate of the branches did not affect the richness of galling insects. However, smaller branches showed a higher abundance of galls, indicating that galls can function as a nutrient drain in host plant plants. Co-occurrence analyses showed that interspecific interactions are not determinant for the organization of the galling insect community in C. arenicola. Therefore, the organization of the galling insect community in C. arenicola should be better explained by stochastic colonization and extinction events in each plant than by deterministic events such, as interspecific interactions.
