Objective: To evaluate the use of hydroalcoholic extract from the peel of the pequi fruit (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) in the composition of photoprotective formulations. Methodology: Tests were carried out evaluating the photoprotective and antioxidant capacity of the extract and formulations where the extract was used as the main active ingredient. Preliminary stability tests of the formulations were also carried out to guarantee their safety and quality. The photoprotective capacity was evaluated in vitro by the sun protection factor and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by the capacity to reduce the diphenyl picryl hydrazine (DPPH) radical. The preliminary stability of the formulations was evaluated by the centrifugation resistance test, the thermal stress test and the stability test at high and low temperatures. Results: The extract presented photoprotective capacity and antioxidant activity proportional to the concentration used. Formulations containing the extract in lower concentrations (SPF 15) were more effective and effective. Conclusions: The ethanolic extract from the peel of the pequi tree presents characteristics of photoprotection and antioxidant activity and its use as an active ingredient in formulations provides efficacy in photoprotection.
